The Choir
Chester Male Voice Choir has just celebrated its 80th year Anniversary and is an established choir, based in Chester. The choir currently has 50 members in the age range of 40’s to 80’s years. The choir entertains in a number of concerts each year and raises money for both national and local charities.
As well as singing, the choir enjoys many social events and has a strong sense of togetherness. We have annual tours where we enjoy the company of family and friends and entertain audiences, joining with local choirs.
The Role
We are seeking to appoint a new Musical Director, who will have flair and creativity in addition to sound musical abilities. The Musical Director will lead the choir, inspiring them to improve their techniques and widen their range of musical ability, whilst enjoying singing together and be responsible for the development and enjoyment of the choir
The successful applicant will initially be appointed for a probationary period of 3 months after which time it will be open to review by both parties.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Prepare, rehearse and conduct the Choir in regular twice weekly rehearsals (Wednesdays & Sundays).
• Conduct the Choir at all public performances, competitions and special events
• Lead and inspire the members towards high musical standards, both with and without musical scores.
• Devise and run practical and timely rehearsal schedules
• Engage with choir members in a social aspect
• Maintain a professional relationship with the accompanist
• Review and determine the repertoire in consultation with the committee, providing a good mix of music styles and ability levels.
• Prepare a programme of pieces for social singing.
• To liaise with the Performance Manager in the preparation of concerts
• Help recruit new members to the choir.
Required Abilities, Skills and Knowledge
• A thorough knowledge of vocal technique and repertoire is essential
• An ability to read music and an appropriate musical qualification
• Motivational skills and experience to work with singers who have a wide range of experience and ability
• Experience as a choir conductor with a four section male voice choir is prer
ferred.

Interview and audition
Our Chairman will invite suitable applicants to meet with a selection panel. We will then arrange for the shortlisted applicants to lead a period of rehearsal, when members will have the chance to meet the applicants in both a formal and informal context.
